Taking Time For Yourself.

This past month has been filled with stress. Between making the decision to quit my job, and moving apartments, I’ve had my hands fun. But you know how you brush stressful situations off and go “oh, I can handle it, this is fine”? Sometimes its not fine and you just need to step away from it all and take a bit of time for yourself.

My “burnout” moment was a couple days ago. I had just moved into my new place and I had decided I wanted to film a few videos. My room was still in shambles. I had no makeup on but I was determined to get new content up for this week. Needless to say, it did NOT happen. I got too frustrated with lighting setups and not knowing what I wanted to say, that I decided to give myself a break, take a walk, and get a coffee. Once I gave myself time to step away and breathe, working seemed to be much easier.

When we want to achieve something, we work extra hard in order to do that, but it’s necessary to have a life in there and to take the time to step away, take a deep breath, and return to it later. That being said, here are 5 tips on how to take time for yourself.

1. Go For a Walk

Listen, I know you’re not a dog and don’t need to be walked daily but walks are one of my FAVORITE ways to a) relax and b) get some physical activity into my day. Whether you listen to music, an audiobook/podcast, or walk in silence, having the time to focus on just WALKING can help you clear your head. At one point in my life when I dealt with DAILY stress, I walked for almost 2 hours a day and lost about 20 pounds. That’s crazy!

2. Call/Spent Time with a Friend

No, not in the Who Wants to be a Millionaire sense. Calling up a friend, especially one you haven’t seen in a long time can give you time to not only relax but you can vent about life, talk about the exciting projects you are working on, or just gossiping about boys (don’t act like you don’t just sit around doing this).

3. Read/Watch/Listen to Something/Someone Who Inspires You

Whenever I get overwhelmed with life, I always turn to Meghan Rienks’ vlogs. She inspires me her positive attitude and hilarious videos, so whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed and in need of a little YouTube inspiration, I turn those on. Anything that inspires you to get back to work and to LOVE what you do is an excellent way to spend down time because it keeps you excited for when down time is over.

4. Adult Coloring Books or Any Other Craft/Project

NOW, I haven’t tried these personally but I have heard from MANY people that adult coloring books are very relaxing, especially for those of us who suffer from anxiety. Being able to focus on just coloring inside the lines gives you the opportunity to clear your mind of everything else.

5. Write.

Having a journal, even if its not a “daily diary” is a good way to clear your mind. Set aside a bit of time to just write, write whatever comes to mind. I find that I can’t lie when I go to write in a journal, so I’ll reread my entry and go “OMG that’show I feel about something”, I didn’t even realize. And if nothing else, it gives you a few minutes of quiet time.
